In recent years, with the development of automotive technology, LED headlights have become increasingly popular. Compared with halogen lamps and xenon lamps, LED lamps that use chips to emit light have been comprehensively improved in terms of durability, brightness, energy saving and safety. Therefore, it has the strongest comprehensive strength and has become the new favorite of manufacturers. Nowadays, many new cars emphasize that they are equipped with LED light sets in order to show their “luxury”.
You know, in the past few years, mid-to-high-end models were equipped with xenon headlights. However, looking at the models on sale today, almost all of them use LED headlights. There are only a few models that still use xenon headlights (Beijing BJ80/90, Touran (mid-to-high configuration), DS9 (low configuration), Kia KX7 (top configuration), etc.).
However, as the most “original” halogen headlights, they can still be seen on many models. Mid- to low-end models of some brands such as Honda and Toyota still use a combination of low-beam halogen + high-beam LED headlights. Why haven’t halogen lamps been replaced on a large scale, but instead the more “powerful” xenon headlights will gradually be replaced by LEDs?
On the one hand, halogen headlights are cheap to make. You know, the halogen lamp evolved from the tungsten filament incandescent lamp. To put it bluntly, it is a “light bulb”. Moreover, the technology of halogen headlights is now quite mature, and car companies are willing to use it in some models that lower the price. At the same time, halogen lamps have lower maintenance costs, and they still have a market for some users with limited budgets.
Referring to the data on the Industry Information Network, for the same headlights, halogen lamps cost about 200 to 250 yuan each; xenon lamps cost 400 to 500 yuan; LEDs are naturally more expensive, costing 1,000 to 1,500 yuan.
In addition, although many netizens think that halogen lamps are not bright enough and even call them “candle lights”, the penetration rate of halogen lamps is much higher than that of xenon lamps and LED car lights. For example, the color temperature of LED car lights is about 5500, the color temperature of xenon lamps is also more than 4000, and the color temperature of halogen lamps is only 3000. Generally speaking, when light is scattered in rain and fog, the higher the color temperature, the worse the light penetration effect, so the penetration effect of halogen lamps is the best.
On the contrary, although xenon headlights have made progress in terms of brightness, energy consumption and lifespan. The brightness is at least three times that of halogen headlights, and the power loss is much smaller than that of halogen headlights, this also means that its cost must be It is higher, so it was mainly used in mid-to-high-end models.
However, behind the high cost, xenon headlights are not perfect. They have a fatal flaw-astigmatism. Therefore, xenon headlights generally need to be used with lens and headlight cleaning, otherwise they will be a rogue. Moreover, after using xenon headlights for a long time, delay problems will occur.
Generally speaking, the three lighting types of halogen headlights, xenon headlights, and LED headlights have their own advantages and disadvantages.
The biggest reason why xenon headlights are eliminated is that they are not cost-effective. In terms of cost, they are far less expensive than halogen lights, and in terms of performance, they are not as reliable as LED lights. Of course, LED headlights also have shortcomings, such as not being a full-spectrum light source, having a relatively single light frequency, and requiring high heat dissipation.
As more and more models use LED lights, their sense of luxury and high-end is gradually weakened. In the future, laser lighting technology may be further popularized in luxury brands.
